TV Debate

My mother-in-law's TV has died and, because of her built-in TV stand thing in her house, she can't go out and get a new one, as she needs a specific size.

A size that we just happened to have.

I see this as an excellent opportunity to get rid of the TV and the accompanying super-ugly stand filled with junk. Patrick agrees, except that he thinks that we should replace it with a fancy flat screen HD one. I think that we shouldn't replace it. We never watch TV, don't even GET TV, and usually only watch movies on the computer. I see no reason to have a TV, especially a fancy one.

This has been a huge issue lately, a surprising one. Patrick can't give me a single good reason to get a new TV. Not even a bad reason, actually, except that it would look cool. It's funny how we can get so attached to something, even if we don't use it, that we can't even conceive of living without it. Patrick can't remember the last time he watched anything on TV, but he still can't think of not having one. I love the idea. I hope it grows on him.

For 5 years I had no TV.

Although we've one TV in the house now the habit of not watching TV stuck; our family goes out or does things together rather than watch TV, which I think's a good thing.

Our kids can watch no more than 30 minutes of TV a day (usually none, 30 is the maximum) and that's usually as a treat to watch In The Night Garden.

Truth be told, I like it too, in what other programme do you have a squat well meaning troglodyte with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder? ;-)

My wife and I watch Heroes (downloaded on the computer) and Dr Who/Torchwood (our only TV viewing) and that's pretty much it . . .

I've pretty well forgotten that TV exists this year -- now that Grey's Anatomy is not on and I'm never home before 10 I don't think I've sat down to watch a programme for a good month!
Probably for the best anyway! Hope Patrick comes 'round to the idea :)
