Lasts

On Saturday, when Patrick and I were stranded at the bookstore have our "forced" coffee date while we waited for the tow truck, we were having a perfectly normal conversation about nothing in particular when he looked at me and said, "This may be one of the last times we have together - just us - before the baby comes."

That has been the running theme around here for the past few weeks. Even though it could still be weeks before the Turnip arrives (but that subject is strictly verboten), it also could be imminent, which leaves us with this feeling that we should recognize and honor the time that we have left. The haircuts that we got recently will probably be our last before the baby. Last night we probably had the last Mexican we'll eat before the baby. Maybe today's walk will be the last one before the baby. This PB&J that I'm eating for lunch might be the last PB&J I have before the baby.

It is a very odd thing to suddenly try to see and appreciate all the things around you, to acknowledge that things will change even when you don't truly understand how yet. I have been snarky and cranky and impatient for weeks now, but I am trying to see these (God willing) last few days as a chance to appreciate the impending change and properly honor this ending pre-Turnip time of my life.

That's all well and good, and I'm doing my best to be peaceful and calm about the whole thing and let it happen when it is supposed to happen. But, really, it's just another way of distracting myself until he actually gets here and I can fret and fuss over him instead of just sitting here and doing kick counts.

Katie -- I was hoping to get home from FL and see a blog post with pictures of you and baby Turnip!! So sad -- I can't imagine how you are feeling!! Let me know when you find something that works to induce labor!! I have a feeling that we might need it come mid-December!!! Gotta stay away from that tax deadline says daddy Nate!!! Hang in there!! Here is something you can do -- go to the movie store and pick a whole season of your favorite show and watch it all the way through, taking ice cream breaks!! If you taunt Turnip enough with Ice Cream, maybe he will break and come out!!!! It's a thought? Allyson

Reading perinatology and thinking of you -- haven't tweeted or blogged in a couple of days, so I'm hoping that means there's a kiddo!!
