Phone call from my good friend and classmate J last night:
KATIE
How's surgery treating you?
J
Well, today we were really full, so instead of being on the normal floor where the normal ORs are, we got bumped downstairs to the Labor and Delivery ORs...
KATIE
Yeah?
J
Yes...
KATIE
Um... How was that?
J
Well, as I was walking through the hall to get back to the OR, I passed a certain room with a certain sign on it.
KATIE
Yes?
J
Yes.
KATIE
And?
J
The sign said, "No medical students".
KATIE
No kidding! That's good they already have those made - I won't even need to bring my own.
J
Wait... so that's not your room? You're not in the hospital yet having your baby?
KATIE
No, J. Not yet. I'll call you when it happens. Or afterwards, maybe.
J
Aw, man! I was sure that was you! Especially since you didn't update your blog yesterday!

Dear internet, readers, friends, family: I have not gone into labor yet and probably won't for awhile. I had a doctor's appointment yesterday, where I learned that I am no farther along than last week (except the Turnip is a little bigger). When something exciting happens, you'll be among the first to know!
2 Readers rock!:
I know medical students (and partners/spouses of medical students) who have gone to private hospitals specifically to avoid the event of having a classmate deliver their baby (or, in the event of an emergency Caesar, being allowed in on the operation even if no medlets are allowed in the delivery room). The private/public system is different in Australia though...
You're absolutely right, dragonfly. Unfortunately, my insurance will only help out if I deliver at the hospital where we all train. I'm packing a padlock in my hospital bag to put on the door...
